Day 3 of going low carb

Captain's Log, Stardate 08.13.2010

It seems the only way I can release my frustrations is by blogging about it, so lucky you, you get to hear all about it. (I’ll probably become less homicidal calm down in a week or two, so no worries about months of whining about this diet.)

I thought about carbs ALL DAY.

I had to be more deliberate about my cooking to find something both I and Captain Caffeine could eat. He’s a trooper, lovely man, so I settled on chicken vegetable soup. It wasn’t the tastiest soup I’ve made, unfortunately. (Next time I’m using the pressure cooker to make broth and then adding the chicken rather than throwing the raw chicken pieces in water in the crockpot for a few hours—the broth just wasn’t as flavorful as when I make broth with the pressure cooker.)

I wanted to go out and buy a donut.

Around dinnertime, I found I wasn’t that hungry. I don’t know if it was the new supplements making me feel fuller, or if I really wasn’t hungry, or if I was just so bored with the food choices that I didn’t want to eat. Regardless, I ate a bowl of soup rather fretfully and sat in my chair in a miserable lump of unhappiness, but not hungry enough to crave anything bad for me.

I suppose, all things considered, that’s better than shackling myself to a window to prevent myself from attacking a moldy butt of bread from last week.

Wonder of wonders, I found I was actually low on my calorie count. Actually, a little dangerously low. I’m not sure what to do about that. I mean, how great a habit would that be, to get used to eating high fat foods to make up my calorie count for the day? And later, when I’m not low on my calorie count, but I’m still used to the high fat foods? Aiyah. (That’s Asian for “oy vey.”)

Tomorrow we get a basket of veggies from our organic co-op, but I’ll also need to go shopping for some veggies I need for general detox (talked about that yesterday) and some other sources of protein. I’ve been avoiding cheese for some reason. I know, I know, a temporary mental aberration. I’ll buy some tomorrow.

I went low carb once and dropped a lot of weight. I found the forums at lowcarbfriends.com very helpful.

Good luck!

I'm currently NO carb and no sugar I'm wondering if that's easier because once they're out of my system, I really don't crave them! At all! I do have a couple of apples a day which helps, but the rest is good protein and veggies! You can do this and think how happy and healthy you'll look at the end!

Be careful about going too low on the calories. Your weight loss will stall as your body goes into starvation mode.

Add a healthy salad to the soup for a more filling meal. Are you eating 5-6 times per day? I also discovered that when I eat more earlier in the day, I'm less likely to crave snacks or be hungry in the evening.

Finally, I exercise after dinner, which pretty much kills any desire to snack before bedtime. And the more consistently I exercise, the easier it is to follow my low carb routine. Not sure why, but I've found that to be true.

I know, that's why I'm so frustrated! :( You're right, I realized last night that I need to eat more often during the day rather than 3 meals, so I'm doing that today to see if that can help increase my calorie count without increasing my carb intake.

Thanks for the link, Joy! I'll check that out! Hopefully I won't be low carb for very long.

But Gina, are you going to be no carb forever? I totally could not do that!
Ugh, Camy, I've found your posts interesting. I need to cut out the sugars for sure, I have high cholesterol and I'm pretty sure its mainly due to carbs and dairy that I'm consuming. Love my breads and cheese.

Julia--you and me both! Bread has been really hard to give up so far, and I can't imagine if I'll still be craving it this much at the end of the month! Going no sugar hasn't been as hard as I thought it would be, especially since I can still eat fruit!

Chinese Take-Out and Sushi for One

Captain’s Log, Supplemental My agent sent me an article from Publisher’s Weekly that discussed this incident: Chinese Take-Out Spawns Christian Controversy And here’s also a blog post that talks about it in more detail: The Fighting 44s This is Soong-Chan Rah’s blog: The PCS blog In sum: Apparently Zondervan (yes, my publisher), who has partnered with Youth Specialties, had put out a youth leaders skit that had stereotypical Asian dialogue, which offended many Christian Asian Americans. In response to the outcry, Zondervan/Youth Specialities put out a sincere apology and is not only freezing the remaining stock of the book, but also reprinting it and replacing the copies people have already bought. I am very proud of my publisher for how they have handled this situation. The skit writers have also issued a public apology . (I feel sorry for them, because they were only trying to write a funny skit, not stir up this maelstrom of internet controversy. I’ve been in youth work long enou...

Toilet seat cover

Captain’s Log, Supplemental Update August 2008: I wrote up the pattern for this with "improvements"! Here's the link to my No Cold Bums toilet seat cover ! Okay, remember a few days ago I was complaining about the cold toilet seat in my bathroom? Well, I decided to knit a seat cover. Not a lid cover, but a seat cover. I went online and couldn’t find anything for the seat, just one pattern for the lid by Feminitz.com . However, I took her pattern for the inside edge of the lid cover and modified it to make a seat cover. Here it is! It’s really ugly stitch-wise because originally I made it too small and had to extend it a couple inches on each side. I figured I’d be the one staring at it, so who cared if the extension wasn’t perfectly invisible? I used acrylic yarn since, well, that’s what I had, and also because it’s easy to wash. I’ll probably have to wash this cover every week or so, but it’s easy to take off—I made ties which you can see near the back of the seat. And...

Cover Reveal + New Logo for Year of the Dog, a Mahina Security Novel

A New Look for Year of the Dog (and a Behind-the-Scenes Oops!) What do a dog trainer, a security expert, and a nearly-naked book cover have in common? Let me explain. 😅 Year of the Dog is the first book in my Christian romantic suspense series, Mahina Security, set in beautiful (and sometimes dangerous) Hawaii. It features quirky humor, family tensions, sweet romance, and a mystery involving a missing person—and it’s now available to read in the Christian suspense anthology, Danger in the Shadows , on Kindle Unlimited ! But before that happened, I had a bit of a cover mishap… While creating the ebook cover, I realized that the original stock photo made my heroine look, well, completely nekkid. 😳 She’s actually wearing a tube top in the image, but when I cropped it for the ebook, the top disappeared—leaving her looking very PG-13. To fix it, I did some Canva magic on a strappy top from another image and stuck it onto the model (so she’s decent now). But when I resize...
