Lady Wynwood's Spies #6 cover character

The model on the cover of Lady Wynwood’s Spies, volume 6: Martyr is the same as book 1, my character Phoebe. Her real name is Chelsea, and if you’d like, you can see the original stock photo here . I chose this stock photo because the book is essentially about Phoebe, but this pose is different from book 1, where she’s staring at the camera. I wanted to show a bit of “departure” for Phoebe to reflect some of the events in the book. A lot of things change for her, and she’ll never be the same. I was also really excited when I found the stock photo of Bianca’s notebook for the background. It was exactly how I pictured a leather-bound notebook would look like. I also admit that I kind of got lost down a rabbit-hole when I was searching because there were so many neat leather notebooks! My cover designer found the stock photo of the vial of Jack’s potion. She didn’t even have to change the color of the liquid because she found a vial of red liquid, which was perfect. Both the noteboo...

Aya's Fingerless Mitts knitting pattern

In Lady Wynwood’s Spies, volume 6: Martyr , Aya lends Keriah a pair of fingerless gloves since the room is so cold. I had a stitch pattern in mind, but not a yarn to use, so it took me a little while to knit this. I eventually decided to use a yarn that isn’t anything like the yarns available in the Regency, but it’s such a pretty yarn I didn’t care! The yarn is a Knit Picks Special Reserve yarn called Japanese Color Twist. I know that the colors were dyed by Japanese artisan dyers. It looks like they dyed the wool roving, and then the roving was spun into the yarn creating this wild colorway. The name of the colorway is Harajuku, which made me laugh since it’s exactly what I’d expect from the Land of Cosplay. The lace pattern is named “#79 Kind of Wave Running Across (very pretty for a purse),” originally published on pages 171-172 in The Lady's Assistant, volume 2 by Mrs. Jane Gaugain, published in 1842. ( You can download a scanned .pdf of the 5th edition of the book,...

Keriah's Narrow Crescent Scarf

In my series Lady Wynwood’s Spies, my character Keriah is more emotional than her friend Phoebe, and so when writing about her in Lady Wynwood’s Spies, volume 6: Martyr , naturally I described her scarf as having more lively colors than the greens and blues that Phoebe favors. I didn’t really have a particular yarn colorway in mind when I wrote the scene, but when looking through my stash to knit her scarf, I found the Carnival colorway in Knit Picks Chroma Twist Fingering, and it was absolutely perfect for her. Chroma Twist Fingering is discontinued, but you could knit this in Chroma Fingering or any other color-transitional yarn. In the Regency era, a tri-color 3-ply yarn like Chroma Twist Fingering would probably not have been sold in shops, but it also may not have been completely unheard of. It is made by simply dying the wool rather than the finished yarn, and then the dyed wool would be split into 3 parts and each part spun into a single ply, before all three plies...

Quiz from Lady Wynwood's Spies #6 - question 5

The latest volume in my Christian Regency epic serial novel just released, so I thought I’d post a few of my favorite passages from Lady Wynwood’s Spies, volume 6: Martyr . “There is no need for you to apologize.” A sliver of her normal self seemed to return to her, and she lifted an eyebrow at him. “Yes, well, you should not have interrupted my argument with the tree.” “I could not stand by and watch you bully a defenseless beechwood.” QUIZ: Who is Keriah speaking to, Michael or Mr. Benjamin? EXTRA CREDIT: Why was Keriah apologizing to him? This exchange was an unexpected point of levity in an otherwise pretty heavy scene. It surprised me when I was writing it. Start the series with Lady Wynwood’s Spies, volume 1: Archer ! A Christian Historical Adventure set in Regency England with slow-burn romance and a supernatural twist Part one in an epic-length serial novel She met him again by shooting him. Quiz from Lady Wynwood's Spies #6 - question 4

The latest volume in my Christian Regency epic serial novel just released, so I thought I’d post a few of my favorite passages from Lady Wynwood’s Spies, volume 6: Martyr . The laughter died as abruptly as it had started. “Don’t worry, you’ll be suffering even more soon.” The muscles in Jack’s neck drew taut, and he bared his teeth at Michael. “In fact, I want to see you all suffer.” “Why?” Michael asked. “Because you wronged me simply by being born,” he said, spit flying from between his gritted teeth. “And I want you to feel my pain.” QUIZ: Where are Michael and Jack in this scene, in the gentleman’s club or Stapytton House? EXTRA CREDIT: When did Michael first see Jack (in the flesh) without his makeup? I actually wrote this scene back when I was still outlining the entire series, before I’d finished book 2—I stuck the lines of dialogue in my outlining notes. I was just waiting to be able to put them in the book. Start the series with Lady Wynwood’s Spies, volume 1: A...

Quiz from Lady Wynwood's Spies #6 - question 3

The latest volume in my Christian Regency epic serial novel just released, so I thought I’d post a few of my favorite passages from Lady Wynwood’s Spies, volume 6: Martyr . Keriah began making her way forward, but the men only grudgingly allowed her to pass. They were perhaps disgruntled that she was given a reprieve whilst they were forced to continue to wait for further orders. After a man tried to trip her, she repaid him with the edge of her boot heel stomped hard on his toes. He yelped and hopped away from her. “I beg your pardon, it is so dark,” she said. “I am certain I would avoid you if I could see properly.” After that, the men parted before her like the Red Sea parted for the Israelites. For them, it had been the power of God. For Keriah, it was the power of a very sharp edge to her boot heel and a thorough knowledge of the most sensitive bones in a man’s foot. QUIZ: In this scene, was Keriah in an alley or at the backdoor of the club? EXTRA CREDIT: Who gave Keri...

Quiz from Lady Wynwood's Spies #6 - question 2

The latest volume in my Christian Regency epic serial novel just released, so I thought I’d post a few of my favorite passages from Lady Wynwood’s Spies, volume 6: Martyr . As soon as Michael saw the club manager disappear down the corridor leading to the back of the club, he extricated himself from the crowd of young bucks watching the tense, high stakes whist game with fascination. As a disguise, he had once again adopted Sir Cecil Belmoore’s face, which looked as though he were perpetually smelling someone else’s flatulence. It had been amusing when Mr. Drydale had taken quite a while to notice that Michael was standing only a few feet away from him. QUIZ: Which club are they at, The Smoke Domino or Oliver Troy’s? EXTRA CREDIT: In what book did Michael first see Sir Cecil Belmoore? Ahhhh, Sir Cecil. He’s such a ridiculous character I keep mentioning him in the series. What I'm writing in Lady Wynwood's Spies 7

Volume 6 in my Lady Wynwood’s Spies series just released and have started work on volume 7. Here’s the opening paragraphs: Mr. Norton was glad to duck into his club, The Runny Knees, in order to escape the sudden spring downpour. He shook droplets of water from his beaver hat as he handed it to the doorman along with his gloves. “Shall I take your scarf for you also, sir?” the man asked. “Yes, of course.” Norton was reluctant to part with it. As he passed it to Mr. Perkins, he found that he could not resist touching the soft length of knitted wool. He had worn it despite the fact that London was becoming uncomfortably hot in the early part of June and gentlemen rarely wore such simple accessories that marred the elegant harmony of their fashionable ensembles. *** You can bet I’ll be knitting Norton’s scarf! Unfortunately I’m still working on Michael’s scarf (from volumes 4 and 5) AND Keriah’s scarf (from volume 6), so it might be a while before I can post pictures. I admit the ...

Quiz from Lady Wynwood's Spies #6 - question 1

The latest volume in my Christian Regency epic serial novel just released, so I thought I’d post a few of my favorite passages from Lady Wynwood’s Spies, volume 6: Martyr . “This is a gross insult!” Mr. Uppleby roared from inside his office, nearly making the door vibrate with his volume. With more courage (or perhaps less of a sense of self-preservation) than Sol or Mr. Coulton-Jones, Mr. Kyleston knocked firmly on the door and entered even before anyone answered. QUIZ: Was this before or after they meet Mr. Norton? EXTRA CREDIT: When was the first time Mr. Kyleston was mentioned in the series? I actually quite like Mr. Kyleston. I think that if he doesn’t appear later in the series, maybe I’ll write a short story of his own. :) Start the series with Lady Wynwood’s Spies, volume 1: Archer !
