Shelf shock

Captain's Log, Supplemental

You voracious readers know what I’m talking about. You decide to randomly browse through your To-Be-Read pile (or in my case, my To-Be-Read bookshelves (as in plural, folks)) and you’re shocked by what you find.

“I didn’t know I had that book ... I didn’t know I had that book ... or that book ...”

“I have five copies of this one title.”

“I’ve been wanting to read that for so long, I should just take that out and read it next ... or maybe that one, that looks so interesting ... Oh, I’ve been wanting to read that one forever! Yes, I’ll read that next ... Or what about this one ...”

Pathetic, yes. That’s me.

Okay, now I’m completely motivated to get back into that speed reading book I bought and learn how to speed read.

LOL, I can so relate! Need more reading time. Especially after conference. Did your pile increase exponentially after that too?

I can relate to the bookshelves of books to be read...that doesn't even include the books at the library that I haven't been able to get to.

I used to be this way--I had stacks and stacks of unread books. But three years ago, when I installed shelves in my office, I had to cut down on what I had, since three walls of shelves was all I could afford the hardware for. So I had to set a limit for my book buying: I can buy a new book only if I know I'm going to actually sit down and read it within the next month. And since I usually can't guarantee I'm going to have time to do that, I usually don't buy more than one book at a time. But I do still have about a shelf and a half of books I haven't read yet.

This system has increased my utilization of the public library. If I check it out, I have three weeks to either read it or return it. If I do read it and it's one I might want to read again, then I'll let myself buy it.

Grace Livingston Hill romances free to read online

I wanted to update my old post on Grace Livingston Hill romances because now there are tons more options for you to be able to read her books for free online! I’m a huge Grace Livingston Hill fan. Granted, not all her books resonate with me, but there are a few that I absolutely love, like The Enchanted Barn and Crimson Roses . And the best part is that she wrote over 100 books and I haven’t yet read them all! When I have time, I like to dive into a new GLH novel. I like the fact that most of them are romances, and I especially appreciate that they all have strong Christian themes. Occasionally the Christian content is a little heavy-handed for my taste, but it’s so interesting to see what the Christian faith was like in the early part of the 20th century. These books are often Cinderella-type stories or A Little Princess (Frances Hodgson Burnett) type stories, which I love. And the best part is that they’re all set in the early 1900s, so the time period is absolutely fasci...

Pink Sunshine Shawl

Captain's Log, Stardate 01.06.2010 While in Arizona, I visited three knitting stores (all I had time and money for, unfortunately!) and bought this gorgeous yarn by Colinette. The model had this silk colorway with a pink mohair, which made it more pink than I wanted because I already have a very pink shawl and while I love pink, I wanted something both dramatic and different from, well, pink. So I paired this mostly pink silk colorway yarn with a greenish yellow mohair to get this gorgeous shawl that looks like pink sunshine! If you’re on Ravelry, you can see my more detailed notes here . Here’s the shawl! Isn’t it pretty? The mohair makes it very light and airy, while the silk gives it beautiful drape. I edged it with gold glass beads.

Tabi socks, part deux

Captain's Log, Stardate 07.25.2008 (If you're on Ravelry, friend me! I'm camytang.) I made tabi socks again! (At the bottom of the pattern is the calculation for the toe split if you're not using the same weight yarn that I did for this pattern (fingering). I also give an example from when I used worsted weight yarn with this pattern.) I used Opal yarn, Petticoat colorway. It’s a finer yarn than my last pair of tabi socks, so I altered the pattern a bit. Okay, so here’s my first foray into giving a knitting pattern.
