The Parker twins, Brad and Charlie, didn't want to join their parents on vacation in Hawaii. A little sister can be annoying, but little sister, Zoey, was over the top. "The three of us aren't going to Hawaii," she told them. Her parents were shocked by her statement even though it was true. This was not the first time Zoey offered surprising knowledge of future events, nor would it be the last. Arriving at their grandparent's cattle ranch in Oklahoma, the twins learn of the disappearance of cattle from the ranch. This knowledge would set of a series of events that would challenge any detective. There were the mysterious neighbors, the strange lady at church, a psychic lazy dog, and a weird little sister to keep the twins totally confused in their efforts to solve this strange mystery.

CHAPTER ONE

VACATION IN PARADISE

�Our plans for summer vacation have changed this year,� Anthony Parker announced to his family over the dinner table.

Brad and Charlie Parker, identical eleven-year-old twins, looked up from their soggy veggie burgers and stared at their father in horror. Their mother, Jeanette, smiled at her husband as she cut her own dinner into bite-sized pieces. Zoey, the twins� eight-year-old sister, didn�t even look up from her mushy, ketchup-covered French fries.

Brad and Charlie looked at each other, their hazel green eyes clouded with worry, and silently communicated their mutual dread at a change in summer vacation plans. Every summer since the twins were born the Parker family spent a week in Oklahoma with Anthony�s parents, Wade and Anna Parker. For the twins a week on Grandpa and Grandma Parker�s ranch was the closest thing to heaven they could imagine.

�What about Grandpa and Grandma Parker?� Brad asked.

�What about swimming in the pond?� Charlie chimed in.

�And fishing in the creek,� added Brad.

�Catching frogs too!� cried Charlie.

Their dad tried to speak, but Brad and Charlie continued to talk, their voices rising shrilly with every word.

�Grandpa needs our help checking the cattle. He even lets us steer his pick-up through the pasture when Grandma isn�t there,� Charlie blurted.

Looks of surprise were exchanged by their parents, but before either could respond Brad jumped in.

�We want to see our cousins and go horseback riding with them,� Brad told his parents.

Dad held up his hands. �Boys, be quiet for a. . . .�

But Brad said to their father, �Please, we want to go to Oklahoma. Please, Dad, please, please, please. . . . �

�Just close your mouths and listen for one minute,� he snapped in irritation. �We�re going to Hawaii for two weeks.�

�Hawaii!� Charlie shouted.

�Two weeks!� yelled Brad.

�We don�t want to go to stupid old Hawaii,� complained Charlie. �We want to see Grandpa and Grandma.�

�The three of us aren�t going to Hawaii,� Zoey spoke for the first time since dinner began.

Brad and Charlie looked at their little sister as she swirled her fries around in the ketchup and made smiley-faces with her peas and carrots.

�See,� Charlie exclaimed in triumph, �Zoey doesn�t want to go to Hawaii either!�

�I didn�t say that,� Zoey said to her brother. �I said we aren�t going to Hawaii. Only Mommy and Daddy are going.�

Her parents looked at Zoey in surprise. Charlie snarled at his sister, but Brad looked at his parents with hope blooming in his heart.

�Is Zoey right?� Brad asked excitedly. �Are you guys really going to Hawaii without us?�

Their mother watched Zoey with a puzzled look on her face, but Dad answered Brad, �Yes, your Mom and I are going to Hawaii, and you three will be staying with Grandpa and Grandma Parker for two weeks this summer.�

Brad and Charlie shouted with joy and gave each other high fives. Their mom was still watching Zoey with a frown on her face.

�Honey, how did you know that you and your brothers aren�t going to Hawaii with Daddy and me?� Mother asked. �We never told you that.�

Zoey looked at her mother and smiled, �God told me.�

There it was.

I GOT A CONTRACT!

Captain’s Log, Stardate 03.29.2006 I had a wonderfully funny blog post planned for today, but I got sidetracked by some news yesterday! Zondervan has offered me a three-book contract on my Asian chick-lit series ! I’m still stunned by everything that’s happened. The series is actually a 4-book projected Asian chick-lit series about four cousins who fall under the infamous family title "Oldest Single Female Cousin," and their ruthless, wealthy grandma applies pressure on each of them to improve their lack of love interests. I think the first book is tentatively scheduled to be released in August 2007. The blurb on the series is on my website here . Brandilyn Collins posted to the ACFW loop about my writing journey, and Tamara Cooper asked that I share it. And since you all know how much I like to talk , here it is. ICRS Tuesday

Captain's Log, Stardate 07.11.2007 I started the day with a great meeting with Al Hsu , an editor at InterVarsity Press. We discussed Asian Americans—fiction, non-fiction, the church, family. He’s been in publishing for many years and is very wise. We had a great discussion. I also met his wife Ellen, who’s totally nice and is also into card-making! I wandered the floor and happened to meet Robin Jones Gunn. She asked if I’d eaten yet, and since I hadn’t, said to join her for lunch. On the way to lunch, we met Mark Mynheir, and he gave me a copy of his book, got The Void . Isn’t that cool? Robin has so much wisdom. I loved having lunch with her. She gave me such good advice, both professionally and spiritually. I hope I’ll get a chance to have lunch or dinner with her at the ACFW conference in September. I met up with agent Steve Laube, and walked with him to his next meeting, but on the way we were hailed by Cec Murphy and agent Jeff Dunn. Jeff had been the first editor to request...

Romantic guys

Captain’s Log, Stardate 10.13.2006 Heroes: I’m a TV junkie, I admit it. I’m hooked on the new series called Heroes. (It’s like X-Men, but before they realized their powers and came together to become the X-Men. And without the funky costumes.) Okay, regardless of the X-Men type storyline, one of the heroines—a high school girl—is talking to a boy she likes, the quarterback of the football team. He’s sweet-talking her and being very flattering. She says he doesn’t really know her very well. He goes into this romantic spiel about how he notices she draws unicorns in the margins of her notes in class, etc. Now here I pause the TiVo and turn to Captain Caffeine. Skeptical Asian wife: “That’s so un-guy-like! How realistic is it for a typical guy to say something eloquent and romantic like that?” Captain Caffeine: “It sounds romantic because he’s the quarterback of the football team.” Confused Asian wife: “What do you mean?” Captain Caffeine: “If he were a computer geek, he would sound like...

Window shopping

Captain’s Log, Stardate 03.14.2005 Knee update: I went to the doctor today for a checkup, and saw his assistant. I’ve been concerned because there’s still inflammation in my knee joint, and it’s been almost 4 months since the surgery. She said she’d talk to the doctor about it tomorrow and call me. Sometimes he suggests laying off the PT to see if that causes the inflammation to go away, but I don’t know if that will work because lately I’ve been pretty active outside of PT. At PT today, the therapist did ultrasound and some sort of electrical current on the joint. Hopefully that will make the inflammation start to go down. I’ll know by tomorrow, probably. Writing: Mt. Hermon conference starts this Friday! On Thursday night, I’ll be at the Santana Row Borders bookstore to help out (and hopefully learn a bit, too) at a booksigning for several of the ACFW authors who are attending Mt. Hermon .
