Captain's Log, Supplemental

Just back from my writer’s retreat in Minnesota, I’ve started to reevaluate my time. I’m realizing that I need to make more of an effort to protect my creativity (since I now make my living off of it) and allow myself to relax.

One thing I realized in Minnesota is how much I love the sound of running water. My friend Sharon Hinck likes the sound of the ocean (or in her case, Lake Superior), but I think because I grew up in Hawaii, it doesn’t do anything for me.

But streams are wonderful. Waterfalls and rushing rivers are okay, but I like streams the best. Water gurgling over rocks.

So, I thought—why not utilize that in my workspace? We’d received a tabletop water fountain as a wedding gift and never even opened the box. Why not use it now?

Here is my new tranquility corner!



What do you think?

What do you do for your tranquility? Or is it more along the lines of, "Relax? What's that? I think the last time was in '89 ..."

Oh this is nice! I think I need some "running water" sound too because I catch myself hanging out in the fountain area at Home Depot! lol! I would have a hard time keeping my kiddos out of anything tranquil....

Kewl! I don't have a tranquility spot. However, I do burn scented lavender candles, which are supposed to help you relax. Or I drink chamomile tea. :-D

I love the fountain! Mine broke down a while back so I need to get a new one.
Can't seem to find one I like though :)

I'm just giggling at how you can call storms and five days of power outages, and the ongoing adventure and chaos of our household a "writer's retreat." LOL!

I WISH I'd gotten a picture of you hard at work on your laptop - by candlelight.

The peppers from the garden are missing you - no one else is eating them.

I'm glad our Minnesota streams have inspired you, even though Lake Superior made you yawn. ;-)

Come again anytime! There are more hiking trails to explore, and more bunnies, badgers, and chipmunks in the garden. I miss you!

Water is always relaxing. I grew up on Long Island (NY). I love all bodies of water but nothing tops being in/near the ocean.

I don't have a spot but seeing water does it for me. So does certain scents, like lavender or almond.

Tranquility? What's that? With four kids and a dog (very good dog, I should confess) tranquility is a hotel room for the weekend.

Captain’s Log, Stardate 03.29.2006 I had a wonderfully funny blog post planned for today, but I got sidetracked by some news yesterday! Zondervan has offered me a three-book contract on my Asian chick-lit series ! I’m still stunned by everything that’s happened. The series is actually a 4-book projected Asian chick-lit series about four cousins who fall under the infamous family title "Oldest Single Female Cousin," and their ruthless, wealthy grandma applies pressure on each of them to improve their lack of love interests. I’m done

Stay tuned. I’m done. At the beginning of the year, I made a goal of three books this year. That’s four months per book. I started this manuscript January 15th. I finished in the wee hours of May 17th, so it took me about four months, a day and a few hours. Yay me. I’m going to bed now. Yes, this is the espresso maker on the right, and a professional coffee grinder on the left. By the espresso maker, I mean the one I promised to my long-suffering husband if I got a book contract, as a reward for letting me quit my biotech job and write full-time.

Window shopping

Captain’s Log, Stardate 03.14.2005 Knee update: I went to the doctor today for a checkup, and saw his assistant. I’ve been concerned because there’s still inflammation in my knee joint, and it’s been almost 4 months since the surgery. She said she’d talk to the doctor about it tomorrow and call me. Sometimes he suggests laying off the PT to see if that causes the inflammation to go away, but I don’t know if that will work because lately I’ve been pretty active outside of PT. At PT today, the therapist did ultrasound and some sort of electrical current on the joint. Hopefully that will make the inflammation start to go down. I’ll know by tomorrow, probably. Writing: Mt. Hermon conference starts this Friday! On Thursday night, I’ll be at the Santana Row Borders bookstore to help out (and hopefully learn a bit, too) at a booksigning for several of the ACFW authors who are attending Mt. Hermon . Chinese Take-Out and Sushi for One

Captain’s Log, Supplemental My agent sent me an article from Publisher’s Weekly that discussed this incident: Chinese Take-Out Spawns Christian Controversy And here’s also a blog post that talks about it in more detail: The Fighting 44s This is Soong-Chan Rah’s blog: The PCS blog In sum: Apparently Zondervan (yes, my publisher), who has partnered with Youth Specialties, had put out a youth leaders skit that had stereotypical Asian dialogue, which offended many Christian Asian Americans. In response to the outcry, Zondervan/Youth Specialities put out a sincere apology and is not only freezing the remaining stock of the book, but also reprinting it and replacing the copies people have already bought. I am very proud of my publisher for how they have handled this situation. The skit writers have also issued a public apology . ICRS Tuesday

Captain's Log, Stardate 07.11.2007 I started the day with a great meeting with Al Hsu , an editor at InterVarsity Press. We discussed Asian Americans—fiction, non-fiction, the church, family. He’s been in publishing for many years and is very wise. We had a great discussion. I also met his wife Ellen, who’s totally nice and is also into card-making! I wandered the floor and happened to meet Robin Jones Gunn. She asked if I’d eaten yet, and since I hadn’t, said to join her for lunch. On the way to lunch, we met Mark Mynheir, and he gave me a copy of his book, got The Void . Isn’t that cool? Robin has so much wisdom. I loved having lunch with her. She gave me such good advice, both professionally and spiritually. I hope I’ll get a chance to have lunch or dinner with her at the ACFW conference in September. I met up with agent Steve Laube, and walked with him to his next meeting, but on the way we were hailed by Cec Murphy and agent Jeff Dunn. Jeff had been the first editor to request...
