Ono grinds . . .

Let’s talk about food. Because I must confess, that’s one of the primary reasons I go back to Hawaii as often as I can.

I have a list of foods I want to eat when I visit my parents. My husband is rather envious right about now because I’ve eaten some of his favorites, too.

I have to eat kalbi and meat chun (thin beef slices quick-fried in a light egg batter) at Dong Yang Inn, a hole-in-the-wall Korean BBQ diner. They serve massive portions and the food is fabulous. The kalbi is served over rice so the juices and marinade can make a sort of light gravy.

I had this on Saturday and considered calling Captain Caffeine to gloat, but my mom said that was too mean. However, I’m making it up to him because we’ll order some the night before I leave, freeze it, and send it through baggage in a Styrofoam cooler, just for him.

Ezogiku is a small restaurant that serves Sapporo ramen noodles. It’s to die for. They also make Japanese-style potstickers, called gyoza, which are very yummy.

My dad is going to make huli huli chicken for me on Saturday. It’s rotisserie chicken, slow-roasted (and smoked) over an open fire of mesquite wood. All dad puts on the chicken is Hawaiian salt, pepper, and paprika, but somehow the cooking method turns it into a mouthful of heaven. When it’s right off the fire, my family grabs the wings, which are crispy and delicious.

My family’s favorite sushi bar is Kabuki restaurant in Pearl City (right next to Ezogiku) because the sushi chefs are from Japan and my parents have gone so often they know each other. They talk and chat and have a good time.

Kua’aina makes the best hamburgers and French fries on the island, and I absolutely have to go there and indulge in a 2000+ calorie lunch. It is worth every single fat gram. Their burgers are generous and dripping, and their fries are shoestring-cut. I don’t think they’ve ever cleaned their fryer because the fries taste heavenly.

Dot’s is a small diner in my hometown that’s been around as long as I can remember. Their loco moco is incredible because they make their own hamburger patties with onion, bread, and egg mixed in (like meatloaf) and then smothered in their brown gravy. Captain Caffeine loves Dot’s, too.

Are you hungry now????

More Hawaii adventures later.

I've always wanted to go to Hawaii but I never thought about going for the food...until now.
Oh man! Now I'm really missing good food.

Love your new pic, btw.

GREAT post! I'm fabulously hungry at the moment, and want to join you :) Sounds much better than the 1/2 turkey sandwich I'm eating.

Aloha!

I'm starving! You had to mention a lot of my favorite foods, didn't you?

Man, this stomach flu sucks! When it's over I'm SO getting a plate lunch. And it has to be over by Saturday, I'm not missing your dad's huli-huli chicken! There's nothing like kiawe wood. Yummy.

Can you guys believe Camy teased us like that with all those yummy descriptions of Hawaiian food?!?!

I grabbed the Barbour Aloha antholgy from my MIL's bookshelf and read the first story last night (Colleen Coble's).

What's with all this immersion into Hawaiian culture and food? Maybe God's trying to tell me something!

Road...ah...plane trip!

I'm not much of a meat eater, but some of those things sound good even to me! Glad you're indulging in some of your favorite foods. After all, what would a vacation be without good food?

"Sincerely" by TRUE (from Violet Evergarden)

I’ve been watching the anime Violet Evergarden on Netflix and it is possibly the most beautiful anime series I’ve ever seen. The animation by Kyoto Animation is top notch, the storyline (based on the light novel series ヴァイオレット・エヴァーガーデン by Kana Akatsuki (暁 佳奈)) is emotional and unique, and the original soundtrack by Evan Call is out of this world. The vocal songs in the series are also really beautiful, but the best one is the opening song, “Sincerely” by TRUE. She not only has a beautiful voice, but the melody and lyrics are absolutely gorgeous. I can’t rave about this song enough. 知らない言葉を 覚えていくたび おもかげのなか 手を伸ばすの Each time unknown words come to mind, I reach my hand toward the traces they leave. だけど一人では 分からない言葉も あるのかもしれない But there may be words That I can’t comprehend all alone. さよならは 苦くて アイシテルは 遠いにおいがした 例えようのない この想いは とても怖くて だけど とても愛おしくて “Goodbye” is so bitter, While “I love you” carries a far-off scent. This incomparable feeling Is so very frightening… bu...

Captain’s Log, Stardate 03.14.2005 Knee update: I went to the doctor today for a checkup, and saw his assistant. I’ve been concerned because there’s still inflammation in my knee joint, and it’s been almost 4 months since the surgery. She said she’d talk to the doctor about it tomorrow and call me. Sometimes he suggests laying off the PT to see if that causes the inflammation to go away, but I don’t know if that will work because lately I’ve been pretty active outside of PT. At PT today, the therapist did ultrasound and some sort of electrical current on the joint. Hopefully that will make the inflammation start to go down. I’ll know by tomorrow, probably. Writing: Mt. Hermon conference starts this Friday! On Thursday night, I’ll be at the Santana Row Borders bookstore to help out (and hopefully learn a bit, too) at a booksigning for several of the ACFW authors who are attending Mt. Hermon . That should be lots of fun. I had a good brainstorming time at ...

Grace Livingston Hill romances free to read online

I wanted to update my old post on Grace Livingston Hill romances because now there are tons more options for you to be able to read her books for free online! I’m a huge Grace Livingston Hill fan. Granted, not all her books resonate with me, but there are a few that I absolutely love, like The Enchanted Barn and Crimson Roses . And the best part is that she wrote over 100 books and I haven’t yet read them all! When I have time, I like to dive into a new GLH novel. I like the fact that most of them are romances, and I especially appreciate that they all have strong Christian themes. Occasionally the Christian content is a little heavy-handed for my taste, but it’s so interesting to see what the Christian faith was like in the early part of the 20th century. These books are often Cinderella-type stories or A Little Princess (Frances Hodgson Burnett) type stories, which I love. And the best part is that they’re all set in the early 1900s, so the time period is absolutely fasci...

Simplification 2013

It seems like every year I realize I’ve filled my time with things that take up too much of my time! As I’ve been praying over 2013 during the month of January, I’ve been feeling I need to (once again) simplify my life. So I’m stepping back from a blog I contribute to. I’m also aiming for less participation in some of my Goodreads groups (that is truly a time suck! Fun, but time suck.) My book writing schedule is still very busy, so I’ll be doing no more critiques with my Story Sensei business in the first half of the year so that I can focus on my books, on writing what God wants me to write. I’m going to focus my energy on my own blog --I’m aiming to post 3-4 times a week, as well as posting contests more regularly. I’m also going to be more active on my Goodreads group and my Facebook page , posting contests there as well. And I absolutely DEPEND on those three outlets for help when naming characters, since many of you know how pathetic challenged I am in coming up wit...

My first hand-spun yarn!

Captain's Log, Stardate 01.22.2010 Since late December, I have been learning how to spin wool into yarn using a drop spindle. Yes! It’s true, I have gone totally Amish/old school. (No offense to any Amish or old school people. I mean that in the nicest way.) I don’t know why I suddenly decided to learn to spin. Or if I did know why, I’ve forgotten (I probably explained it to Captain Caffeine at some point, but now I don’t remember what excuse I gave to him). Not having any yarn shops nearby that teach spinning, I bought a Cascade spindle online and some really soft, silky merino wool roving from Etsy.com. I read all kinds of online articles and watched youtube videos. And I spun my first yarn! Here it is! It’s a lace weight yarn (about 30 wraps per inch), since I like using finer gauge yarns over bulkier yarns. It’s rather uneven (although it’s not as easy to tell in the picture) and I didn’t ply it very well, but I made it all by myself! Captain Caffeine does not...
