Fear God. My word for the year is “fear” of the Lord.

I got this fabulous idea from Marilynn Griffith. She picks a word for the year in January.

Last year, I prayed and God laid on my heart that my word was “persevere.” NOT a very comforting word for the year, but it proved apt with some of the stresses I had that year.

This year, it’s fear of the Lord. The past few months, I’ve been convicted that I take God for granted. It’s become especially obvious as I read the Old Testament and see God’s mighty power and holiness.

In my Bible in 90 Days, I’m on day 35 and I’m in the Psalms.

I came across a verse that seemed to speak to me on my word for the year:

The Lord is a friend to those who fear him,
He teaches them his covenant.
Psalm 25:14 (NLT)

I like the contrast and combination of those two words, friend and fear. It’s almost as if those two words are too paradoxical, but I think it’s in the Bible to show God’s majesty and fierce love for us.

No word right now, but I love that verse. Paradoxical is a good explanation. It is first confusing and also comforting. If we could understand God, he wouldn't be God, right? Thanks for the verse.

Love that verse, Camy. The Lord gave me two words this year: Peace and Simplicity. I'm looking forward to some of that!

I think last years word for me was "trust" and I had to learn to seriously trust the events in my life were in God's control.

This year I'm thinking it's "patience," with four kids, a deployed Dhand getting him home, and then trying to get my 1st MS ready for agents takes a lot--added ontop of the rest of my life.

God gave me a metaphor for the new year - "Don't wear borrowed armor."

(referring to little David as he prepared to fight Goliath and Saul lent him armor).

I blogged about what that means to me over at Faithchicks a few days ago.

Interesting. I've never thought of having a word for the year, but I have definitely had certain words for certain seasons. This season the word is wisdom, and I foresee it being a very long season until that word becomes complete in me. That's okay though. I look forward to working this one out with Him.

I read that post too...having a word of the year. I've never thought of it before but it's not a bad idea. My husband and I usually come up with corny slogans for the year. Shoot for 11 in 2007...it's a reference to the movie Spinal Tap.

I like your word though...I always think of "awe" and "reverence" instead of fear because of the other connotations to the word. Perhaps I'll have to think about this more!

I think "trust", as "in Him". The more I believe I trust God, the more I discover ways in which I try to control the events of my life (and didn't realize it). So focusing on trust will allow my soul-eyes to continue to be open.

Grace Livingston Hill romances free to read online

I wanted to update my old post on Grace Livingston Hill romances because now there are tons more options for you to be able to read her books for free online! I’m a huge Grace Livingston Hill fan. Granted, not all her books resonate with me, but there are a few that I absolutely love, like The Enchanted Barn and Crimson Roses . And the best part is that she wrote over 100 books and I haven’t yet read them all! When I have time, I like to dive into a new GLH novel. I like the fact that most of them are romances, and I especially appreciate that they all have strong Christian themes. Occasionally the Christian content is a little heavy-handed for my taste, but it’s so interesting to see what the Christian faith was like in the early part of the 20th century. These books are often Cinderella-type stories or A Little Princess (Frances Hodgson Burnett) type stories, which I love. And the best part is that they’re all set in the early 1900s, so the time period is absolutely fasci...

Tabi socks, part deux

Captain's Log, Stardate 07.25.2008 (If you're on Ravelry, friend me! I'm camytang.) I made tabi socks again! (At the bottom of the pattern is the calculation for the toe split if you're not using the same weight yarn that I did for this pattern (fingering). I also give an example from when I used worsted weight yarn with this pattern.) I used Opal yarn, Petticoat colorway. Sourdough Treacle Buns recipe from Lady Wynwood's Spies

If you read my Christian Regency Romantic Suspense novel, Lady Wynwood’s Spies, volume 2: Berserker , you will have noticed that Miss Tolberton brings humble treacle buns to eat with tea at the church. Not only that, but the treacle bun appears in a surprising way in Lady Wynwood’s Spies, volume 3: Aggressor . I got the idea for treacle buns from looking through old cookbooks from the 1800s. Commercial dry yeast cakes for making breads were not available until 1825, which is 15 years after the date of my book, so most breads during the Regency period were made with sourdough starters. “Black treacle” is the same thing as molasses, and was mentioned in cookbooks published during the Regency period, but in those books, I couldn’t find a recipe for treacle bread or treacle buns or brown bread. Romantic guys

Captain’s Log, Stardate 10.13.2006 Heroes: I’m a TV junkie, I admit it. I’m hooked on the new series called Heroes. (It’s like X-Men, but before they realized their powers and came together to become the X-Men. And without the funky costumes.) Okay, regardless of the X-Men type storyline, one of the heroines—a high school girl—is talking to a boy she likes, the quarterback of the football team. He’s sweet-talking her and being very flattering. She says he doesn’t really know her very well. He goes into this romantic spiel about how he notices she draws unicorns in the margins of her notes in class, etc. Now here I pause the TiVo and turn to Captain Caffeine.
