376. My cable modem, which is so much better than dial-up
377. I ordered my new laptop computer yesterday! Well, technically at 2 a.m. just before we went to bed. A MacBook Pro, 15” glossy screen. I also ordered Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac—kind of a necessity since most publishing houses and writers use Microsoft Word.
378. I love stamping. Love, love, love it. I love that I’ll be giving away cards this Christmas as gifts.
379. I can order stamps from my friend, author, and Stampin’ Up hostess Sharon Hinck. She totally gets how it’s so soothing to make cards as a stress-reliever when the writing is getting difficult.
380. I get to read Sharon’s book, Restorer’s Son, when she’s done with edits!
381. The December sale at Stampin’ Up and the great stamps I bought. I can’t wait to get them and make new cards.
382. All the ribbons and things I bought years ago for craft projects are now perfect for the cards I’m making.
383. I finally managed to get to the post office yesterday. I was a little late on mailing a few books from my blog book giveaway, so please forgive me. And somebody tell me why it’s cheaper to send a book to Canada via Airmail (3-5 days) than it is to send it via Parcel Post (4-6 WEEKS)???? Go figure.
384. I had such a great time talking with Sharon yesterday about new writer pressures, problems, and disappointments. She cheered me on and I cheered her up.
385. I got my Rodney Strong wines yesterday from the Wine Club
386. My dog didn’t bite the UPS guy delivering wines, nor did she run out into the street in a mad dash for freedom.
387. I got slip-on tennis shoes from Payless Shoes yesterday and they’re perfect as houseshoes. They’re warm, cushioned, and the rubber soles are ideal for keeping my knee stable on the linoleum and tile floors. It looks a little strange because it’s almost as if I’m wearing outdoor shoes in the house when normally we don’t wear outdoor shoes indoors (for me, it’s an Asian thing I grew up with)
388. Payless had a buy one, get one half off sale and I got this pair of strappy silver sandals which had been dyed for someone but it ended up they didn’t want them, and they were normally $37.95 but they were marked down to $10 and then I got half off! $5 for $38 shoes! They fit decently, too—my foot doesn’t slide around like it normally does in regular width sandals.
389. My manuscript word count is slowly going up. I hope I can finish in the next week or 10 days.
390. Despite a slight lack of sleep, I exercised yesterday! Yay!
391. I found the perfect stamp for Heather and bought it on eBay. I hope I get it in time to make cards for her.
392. My wonderful husband picked up the money order for me to pay for my new stamp
393. Have I mentioned I love my job even though there are times (like now) when the words come sluggishly?
394. I had fun watching Justice and reruns of CSI Miami last night.
395. Dinner last night was yummy—I stir-fried chicken with a chopped up onion and threw that over pasta with broccoli florets (frozen and reheated in the microwave), with pesto sauce (premade in the refrigerated section) and sprinkled with bread crumbs that I toasted with olive oil and salt. The bread crumbs gave it a nice texture and nutty flavor.
396. I almost forgot the garlic bread—artisan bread from Nob Hill, sliced and spread with a small pat of butter and chopped up garlic (lots of garlic), baked at 350oF for 20 minutes. Yum yum.
397. Robin called me yesterday. There are exciting things going on in ACFW!
398. My husband came home early yesterday. :)
399. The ACFW Book Club has some great books lined up for the next few months.
400. I found it amusing that I was on the list of enemies to pray for on Danica’s blog, Praying for Our Enemies. LOL! I know she doesn’t mean it that way, it just humored me (I’m humored very easily). And while you’re there, leave a comment about enemies you want/need/should pray for. The blog is a great statement about our Christian faith and the simple fact that we’re all human.

Captain’s Log, Stardate 03.29.2006 I had a wonderfully funny blog post planned for today, but I got sidetracked by some news yesterday! Zondervan has offered me a three-book contract on my Asian chick-lit series ! I’m still stunned by everything that’s happened. The series is actually a 4-book projected Asian chick-lit series about four cousins who fall under the infamous family title "Oldest Single Female Cousin," and their ruthless, wealthy grandma applies pressure on each of them to improve their lack of love interests. Brainstorm - character occupation

Captain's Log, Stardate 03.23.2009 Hey guys, I could use some help. In my current manuscript, The Year of the Dog , which is a humorous contemporary romance, I have a minor character, Eddie. He’s my heroine’s ex-boyfriend, and they’re on good terms with each other. He’s a bit irresponsible, but not so much so that he’s a complete loser. He’s got a very easy going attitude, he forgets to pay his bills sometimes, he’s friendly and charming. He’s adventurous and fun to be around, but he’s a little forgetful sometimes, and he tends to spend a little outside his income. I need an occupation for him. What would a charming, easy going, slightly irresponsible guy do for a living? He’s not too irresponsible, because otherwise readers will wonder what in the world my heroine saw in him to date him in the first place. She was attracted to his charm, his easy going attitude (her family’s uptight, and he was a nice contrast), and his adventurousness. But his forgetfulness and irresponsibility ...

Window shopping

Captain’s Log, Stardate 03.14.2005 Knee update: I went to the doctor today for a checkup, and saw his assistant. I’ve been concerned because there’s still inflammation in my knee joint, and it’s been almost 4 months since the surgery. She said she’d talk to the doctor about it tomorrow and call me. Sometimes he suggests laying off the PT to see if that causes the inflammation to go away, but I don’t know if that will work because lately I’ve been pretty active outside of PT. At PT today, the therapist did ultrasound and some sort of electrical current on the joint. Hopefully that will make the inflammation start to go down. I’ll know by tomorrow, probably. Writing: Mt. Hermon conference starts this Friday! On Thursday night, I’ll be at the Santana Row Borders bookstore to help out (and hopefully learn a bit, too) at a booksigning for several of the ACFW authors who are attending Mt. Hermon . Stay tuned. I’m done. At the beginning of the year, I made a goal of three books this year. That’s four months per book. I started this manuscript January 15th. I finished in the wee hours of May 17th, so it took me about four months, a day and a few hours. Yay me. I’m going to bed now. Yes, this is the espresso maker on the right, and a professional coffee grinder on the left. By the espresso maker, I mean the one I promised to my long-suffering husband if I got a book contract, as a reward for letting me quit my biotech job and write full-time.

Chinese Take-Out and Sushi for One

Captain’s Log, Supplemental My agent sent me an article from Publisher’s Weekly that discussed this incident: Chinese Take-Out Spawns Christian Controversy And here’s also a blog post that talks about it in more detail: The Fighting 44s This is Soong-Chan Rah’s blog: The PCS blog In sum: Apparently Zondervan (yes, my publisher), who has partnered with Youth Specialties, had put out a youth leaders skit that had stereotypical Asian dialogue, which offended many Christian Asian Americans. In response to the outcry, Zondervan/Youth Specialities put out a sincere apology and is not only freezing the remaining stock of the book, but also reprinting it and replacing the copies people have already bought. I am very proud of my publisher for how they have handled this situation. The skit writers have also issued a public apology . (I feel sorry for them, because they were only trying to write a funny skit, not stir up this maelstrom of internet controversy. I’ve been in youth work long enou...
