Have your novel critiqued in August! Prices for the Story Sensei will increase as of September 1st. All you fabulous writers have until then if you’d like to have your manuscript critiqued at the old prices.

Current prices:

Novel Manuscript critique: $1 per 100 words (or 1 cent per word)

Novel Synopsis critique: $40

Novel Synopsis critique and condensation: $125
Service details: I will both critique your synopsis and cut it down to any number of pages or words it needs to be shortened. Synopsis can be up to 20 single-spaced pages. Price includes a second read-through after critique and revision.

Novel Proposal (not including sample chapters) and synopsis critique: $80
Service details: I will critique your proposal, which includes hook, bio, marketing analysis, etc. Proposal does NOT include sample manuscript chapters. Manuscript chapter critique is 1 cent per word in addition to the $80 fee.

Novel Query letter: $10 (free with full or partial manuscript critique)

Novel Manuscript critique:
I will be charging a flat rate based on your manuscript’s total word count.

1 to 3,000 words: $40
3,001 to 6,000 words: $75
6,001 to 10,000 words: $120
10,001 to 15,000 words: $175
15,001 to 20,000 words: $230
20,001 to 25,000 words: $275
25,001 to 30,000 words: $325
30,001 to 35,000 words: $370
35,001 to 40,000 words: $415
40,001 to 45,000 words: $450
45,001 words and above: 1 (one) cent per word, exact computer word count (not in increments)

Numbers above are your manuscript’s total word count, whether partial or full manuscripts. For manuscripts over 40,000 words, the prices for manuscript critiques are the same as the old prices.

For instance, if you’d like me to critique a partial manuscript of three chapters, 33,333 words, it would cost $370.

If your partial manuscript is only 8,765 words, then it would cost $120.

If you wanted your full manuscript critiqued and it’s a total of 80,765 words, it would cost $807.65.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I can hear the whining all the way here in California. Time is money, chickie-babies. I give an honest, thorough critique. I want to charge a fair rate so that I can give a good quality critique. I also need to eat.

Back before Camy got in the business she very generously used to rip my stuff apart for free. I can tell you I learned a lot from her. She very brilliantly reduced my attempts at local dialogue from unreadable to readable. She's worth every penny. I know where I'm going to go when I need something done and can afford it. :)

Lavender hand lotion

Captain's Log, Stardate 11.05.2009 I have to tell you, I LOVE Etsy.com ! Etsy is dedicated to providing a marketplace for people who like to make handmade products and people who appreciate them (and buy them). It has everything from handmade gifts (like my mom’s Bucilla Christmas stockings and ornaments and tree skirts and wall hangings and … well, just click here to see what she has! ) to soaps and lotions and jewelry and knitted items and hand-painted yarn and ... I could surf that website for DAYS. Anyway, lately I’ve been concerned about the lead content in my lotions, especially since I’m using them more now that it’s turned colder and drier here in California. I have to use lotion on my hands everytime after I wash them. So I went onto Etsy and searched for organic hand lotions, and bought this lavender lotion from Lue Cosmetics . Captain’s Log, Supplemental My agent sent me an article from Publisher’s Weekly that discussed this incident: Chinese Take-Out Spawns Christian Controversy And here’s also a blog post that talks about it in more detail: The Fighting 44s This is Soong-Chan Rah’s blog: The PCS blog In sum: Apparently Zondervan (yes, my publisher), who has partnered with Youth Specialties, had put out a youth leaders skit that had stereotypical Asian dialogue, which offended many Christian Asian Americans. In response to the outcry, Zondervan/Youth Specialities put out a sincere apology and is not only freezing the remaining stock of the book, but also reprinting it and replacing the copies people have already bought. I am very proud of my publisher for how they have handled this situation. The skit writers have also issued a public apology . Grace Livingston Hill romances free to read online

I wanted to update my old post on Grace Livingston Hill romances because now there are tons more options for you to be able to read her books for free online! I’m a huge Grace Livingston Hill fan. Granted, not all her books resonate with me, but there are a few that I absolutely love, like The Enchanted Barn and Crimson Roses . And the best part is that she wrote over 100 books and I haven’t yet read them all! When I have time, I like to dive into a new GLH novel. I like the fact that most of them are romances, and I especially appreciate that they all have strong Christian themes. Occasionally the Christian content is a little heavy-handed for my taste, but it’s so interesting to see what the Christian faith was like in the early part of the 20th century. These books are often Cinderella-type stories or A Little Princess (Frances Hodgson Burnett) type stories, which I love. And the best part is that they’re all set in the early 1900s, so the time period is absolutely fasci...
