Interview with Chautona Havig part 2

Today is part of my interview with Contemporary Romance author Chautona Havig! (Part one is here.)

Chautona’s bio:

Camy here: Chautona is one of the twelve authors participating with me in the Christian Contemporary Romance anthology, Save the Date, which releases September 15.

Tomorrow I’ll also post a special knitting pattern for the Newsboy Cap that Chautona’s heroine April uses in her novella, Adoring April, in the Save the Date anthology!

Camy: What was the funnest part of writing Adoring April?

Chautona: In Adoring April, a minister finds himself needing to get married to be able to land his “dream job.” A childhood “grandmother” has it all figured out. He’ll marry one of the young women in the church and it solves two problems—her desire to be a mother, his desire to serve that church. So, to make it remotely believable that a girl would do this thing, I had that same grandmotherly person talk him up to her so much that she’s half-in-love with him before she ever meets him. I had so much fun writing the awkwardness of discovering that he really is all the grandma said he’d be… and that she really did love him, not just the idea of him.

Camy: That’s SO cute!!! So, related to that, what's your favorite scene from Adoring April?

Chautona: Without a doubt the scene where she tries on all the wedding dresses. With only seven weeks to go from strangers to married, April doesn’t have time to find the perfect dress, so the ladies of the church converge on her with THEIR dresses. Let the hilarity commence. I’ll just say there’s one dress that is unbelievable, but I know it exists because I saw it on a gal!

Camy: OH MY GOSH that sounds absolutely hysterical! That’s so cute! (I wish I’d thought of a scene like that!!!)

If your heroine were in an ice cream shop, what flavor would she get and why?

Chautona: I’ve answered this three times and still don’t know if I’m right! However, I think my final answer is cherry almond. It tastes like summer, isn’t too heavy, but is full of flavor. It’s also not everyone else’s favorite, so more for her!

Camy: I totally love cherry almond! I think I’d like your heroine a lot!

What's your next novel to be released?

Chautona: Um… I think Adoring April! I just released Flipping Hearts, my third book in the Independence Islands Series, and coming up is my book in the Christmas Lights Collection and The Nutcracker’s Suite in the Ever After Mysteries series. But I think April is next! Adoring April will be available as a paperback, but it will be MANY years before it’s available to purchase on Kindle. Folks will want to grab it in the Save the Date collection if they want the eBook version. :D

Camy: Wow you’re a busy writer!

Okay, personal question: If each of your family was a dessert (including you), what would they be and why?

Chautona: Considering I have nine kids, three sons-in-law, and five grandkids, not to mention my mom lives with us, I’m going with one, Havig family desert. Mud Pie. Because it’s rich, nutty, caffeinated, and you can only manage it in small pieces before it becomes too much!

Camy: LOLOL that’s fantastic! I didn’t know you have such a large family!

Captain’s Log, Stardate 03.29.2006 I had a wonderfully funny blog post planned for today, but I got sidetracked by some news yesterday! Zondervan has offered me a three-book contract on my Asian chick-lit series ! I’m still stunned by everything that’s happened. I’m done

Stay tuned. I’m done. At the beginning of the year, I made a goal of three books this year. That’s four months per book. I started this manuscript January 15th. I finished in the wee hours of May 17th, so it took me about four months, a day and a few hours. Yay me. I’m going to bed now. Yes, this is the espresso maker on the right, and a professional coffee grinder on the left. By the espresso maker, I mean the one I promised to my long-suffering husband if I got a book contract, as a reward for letting me quit my biotech job and write full-time.

Window shopping

Captain’s Log, Stardate 03.14.2005 Knee update: I went to the doctor today for a checkup, and saw his assistant. I’ve been concerned because there’s still inflammation in my knee joint, and it’s been almost 4 months since the surgery. She said she’d talk to the doctor about it tomorrow and call me. Sometimes he suggests laying off the PT to see if that causes the inflammation to go away, but I don’t know if that will work because lately I’ve been pretty active outside of PT. At PT today, the therapist did ultrasound and some sort of electrical current on the joint. Hopefully that will make the inflammation start to go down. I’ll know by tomorrow, probably. Writing: Mt. Hermon conference starts this Friday! On Thursday night, I’ll be at the Santana Row Borders bookstore to help out (and hopefully learn a bit, too) at a booksigning for several of the ACFW authors who are attending Mt. Hermon . Captain’s Log, Supplemental My agent sent me an article from Publisher’s Weekly that discussed this incident: Chinese Take-Out Spawns Christian Controversy And here’s also a blog post that talks about it in more detail: The Fighting 44s This is Soong-Chan Rah’s blog: The PCS blog In sum: Apparently Zondervan (yes, my publisher), who has partnered with Youth Specialties, had put out a youth leaders skit that had stereotypical Asian dialogue, which offended many Christian Asian Americans. In response to the outcry, Zondervan/Youth Specialities put out a sincere apology and is not only freezing the remaining stock of the book, but also reprinting it and replacing the copies people have already bought. I am very proud of my publisher for how they have handled this situation. The skit writers have also issued a public apology . Tabi socks, part deux

Captain's Log, Stardate 07.25.2008 (If you're on Ravelry, friend me! I'm camytang.) I made tabi socks again! (At the bottom of the pattern is the calculation for the toe split if you're not using the same weight yarn that I did for this pattern (fingering). I also give an example from when I used worsted weight yarn with this pattern.) I used Opal yarn, Petticoat colorway. It’s a finer yarn than my last pair of tabi socks, so I altered the pattern a bit. Okay, so here’s my first foray into giving a knitting pattern.
