What Is a Brutus Cut? A Regency Hair Trend Inspired by Ancient Rome

Regency Haircuts and Disguises in Lady Wynwood’s Spies In this excerpt from Lady Wynwood’s Spies, Volume 8: Traitor , Phoebe prepares for a dangerous mission—one that requires her to disguise herself as a young man. The hairstyle she receives, called a Brutus cut, was actually quite fashionable during the Regency. Read on to find out more about this curious trend and why it suited her new identity so well. Excerpt from Lady Wynwood’s Spies, Volume 8: Traitor : By far, the absolute worst part of Uncle Sol’s plan was that Phoebe had to cut her hair. Of the four agents, Phoebe and Mr. Coulton-Jones would be the least likely to be recognized when they entered the Ramparts building—Mr. Coulton-Jones, because of his skill in altering his facial features and his posture, and Phoebe, because she could play a convincing young man, which no one would expect. A disreputable hat would hide her long hair to an extent, but it would not fool anyone who looked closely. Also, because she would lo...

How My Regency Heroines Hide Knives in Their Corsets

Historical research behind the stealthy fashion of my lady spies What would you do if you were a woman in 1811 and needed to carry a weapon, but had no pockets and couldn’t very well strap a dagger to your thigh? That was the challenge I faced while writing my Christian Regency Romantic Suspense series, Lady Wynwood’s Spies , where my heroines don’t just attend balls and sip tea—they also sneak around carriages, spy on dangerous men, and fight off attackers when necessary. In Volume 7: Spinster and Volume 8: Traitor , two of my heroines—Lena and Phoebe—retrieve hidden knives from secret slits in their gowns. The sheaths are sewn directly onto their corsets. Naturally, you won’t find that kind of accessory in the pages of Ackermann’s Repository of Arts or La Belle Assemblée , the fashion magazines of the day. But I wanted my heroines to be both era-accurate and armed. So I dug into fashion history to find a creative (and plausible) solution. The Idea Behind the Hidden Knife Shea...

Christian Romance Books Progress Update + A Peek at What’s Coming Next

Hi everyone! I have some fun writing news to share. I just finished inputting edits from my editor for my Christian romantic comedy suspense novel,  Year of the Dog . However — in true writer fashion — we caught one little loose thread that needs tying up. So, I’ll be adding a short scene to fully wrap up the story. After that, the book will be fully edited , proofread , and ready! What’s next? I’ll be diving into my Christian Regency romantic suspense novel,  Lady Wynwood’s Spies, Volume 8: Traitor . I had already written a few chapters before finishing Volume 7, but since I made a few tweaks during the editing process, I’ll be revising those chapters to make sure everything flows smoothly. I also have a bit more research to finish before I can fully immerse myself in Volume 8. Thank you so much for following along on this journey! And if you’d like to get behind-the-scenes updates, early chapters, and bonus content, I post regularly on Patreon: 👉 Visit my Patreon here

Camy’s upcoming publishing schedule

After the craziness of the Kickstarter, I hope to put Lady Wynwood’s Spies, Volume 7: Spinster  up on Amazon probably in the first week of March. I am currently working on a Christian contemporary romantic suspense, Year of the Dog , because it’s due for the multi-author anthology I’m in that releases in May, Danger in the Shadows.  I’ll probably post the chapters (including the annotated chapters) on my Patreon, but I won’t be able to give a free .epub copy to my paid subscribers since it’ll release in the anthology in May 2025. The chapters will be taken down in May, so be sure to read it while it’s still up on my Patreon. I’ve been posting my Christian contemporary romantic suspense, Protection for Hire , but there’s a chance I might pause it in order to post Year of the Dog , because I am realizing I’m not very good at juggling two contemporary projects at the same time. If I do pause it, I’ll start up again after Bento and Betrayal  is done, probably sometime in the...

Kickstarter postponed (yes, again!) and book release news

My family was a bit stressed while I was visiting my parents (I promise, it wasn’t me!) and so I decided to postpone my Kickstarter. It has changed my book release schedule, and so I’ll be releasing Lady Wynwood’s Spies, volume 7: Spinster hopefully next month? It has also allowed me to figure out when book 8 will be released. Check out my (rather lengthy) explanation on my Patreon . (You’ll need to set up a free Patreon account if you don't have one.) Lady Wynwood's Spies, Vol. 7: Spinster rough draft finished!

I finished the rough draft of Lady Wynwood’s Spies, Volume 7: Spinster! Next up is editing and formatting. I also posted a bit about what’s next. You can read about it here . Thank you SO much for praying for my health! I know it’s only because of your prayers that I was able to finish the book without my IBS flaring up! If you haven’t read it yet, the first 2 chapters (Prologue and Chapter 1) are available free for all Followers on my Patreon. I also added annotated versions with Easter Eggs, background research, and comments .

What I'm writing in Lady Wynwood's Spies 7

Volume 6 in my Lady Wynwood’s Spies series just released and have started work on volume 7. Here’s the opening paragraphs: Mr. Norton was glad to duck into his club, The Runny Knees, in order to escape the sudden spring downpour. He shook droplets of water from his beaver hat as he handed it to the doorman along with his gloves. “Shall I take your scarf for you also, sir?” the man asked. “Yes, of course.” Norton was reluctant to part with it. As he passed it to Mr. Perkins, he found that he could not resist touching the soft length of knitted wool. He had worn it despite the fact that London was becoming uncomfortably hot in the early part of June and gentlemen rarely wore such simple accessories that marred the elegant harmony of their fashionable ensembles. *** You can bet I’ll be knitting Norton’s scarf! Unfortunately I’m still working on Michael’s scarf (from volumes 4 and 5) AND Keriah’s scarf (from volume 6), so it might be a while before I can post pictures. I admit the ...
