Protection for Hire book #3

Several of you awesome peeps have emailed me and posted on my Facebook page, asking about the third Protection for Hire series book. Well, I’m working on it right now!

Since Zondervan opted not to publish the third book in the series, I’ll be self-publishing this one. And since I’ll be self-publishing, I can do a little genre-bending.

It’ll still have the same (twisted) humor and suspense/mystery, but it’ll also be a sort of “what if?” storyline. I’ve been calling it a Dystopian, but that’s not accurate—it’s not a far-flung future like The Hunger Games or Divergent, but more like a, “What if something catastrophic happens next week?”

It’ll set the stage for more books in that “what if?” story world, which will be more like true Dystopian books.

Why Dystopian? Because I stinkin’ love them!!!!

I didn’t realize this until recently, but Dystopian and “what if?” storylines have been very popular in anime and manga for a long time, and that’s what I would watch and read when I was a kid. I also loved Marvel comics, which again is that sort of “what if?” alternate present world.

Also, about two and a half years ago, I had a strong Word from God—complete with vision and everything—about this Dystopian world/storyline, and an injunction to WRITE IT. I was powerfully moved, but I also had several writing contracts at the time and decided to finish those and then write the Dystopian.

Well, that never happened. I’d get more contracts, which I’m certainly not going to turn down, and I always told myself I could write the Dystopian in between those contracts. But I was never able to do it. And I started getting burned out. Remember that “bad place self-confidence-wise” that I talked about in my last post? That’s what happens, I guess, when—like a complete idiot—you utterly ignore a Word from God.

So now I’m back on track and writing the books He wanted me to write. While this will be the third Protection for Hire book, it will be the first of, I hope, many in this story world. And some of those might even get traditionally published if a publisher decides to take a chance on me.

And don't worry, I'll still be writing more Regency romance novels, too! My other favorite genre. :)

Have you given any thought (or submissions) to Enclave Publishing (formerly Marcher Lord Press) publishers of Christian Fantasy and Science Fiction, in fact which claims to be the premier publisher of Christian speculative fiction?

Yes, I've enjoyed their books too, but I think I'd like to self-publish this one because it won't really have a traditional format. I'm thinking of writing it as a serial novel.

I GOT A CONTRACT!

Captain’s Log, Stardate 03.29.2006 I had a wonderfully funny blog post planned for today, but I got sidetracked by some news yesterday! Zondervan has offered me a three-book contract on my Asian chick-lit series ! I’m still stunned by everything that’s happened. The series is actually a 4-book projected Asian chick-lit series about four cousins who fall under the infamous family title "Oldest Single Female Cousin," and their ruthless, wealthy grandma applies pressure on each of them to improve their lack of love interests. ICRS Tuesday

Captain's Log, Stardate 07.11.2007 I started the day with a great meeting with Al Hsu , an editor at InterVarsity Press. We discussed Asian Americans—fiction, non-fiction, the church, family. He’s been in publishing for many years and is very wise. We had a great discussion. I also met his wife Ellen, who’s totally nice and is also into card-making! I wandered the floor and happened to meet Robin Jones Gunn. She asked if I’d eaten yet, and since I hadn’t, said to join her for lunch. On the way to lunch, we met Mark Mynheir, and he gave me a copy of his book, got The Void . Isn’t that cool? Robin has so much wisdom. I loved having lunch with her. She gave me such good advice, both professionally and spiritually. I hope I’ll get a chance to have lunch or dinner with her at the ACFW conference in September. Captain’s Log, Stardate 03.14.2005 Knee update: I went to the doctor today for a checkup, and saw his assistant. I’ve been concerned because there’s still inflammation in my knee joint, and it’s been almost 4 months since the surgery. She said she’d talk to the doctor about it tomorrow and call me. Sometimes he suggests laying off the PT to see if that causes the inflammation to go away, but I don’t know if that will work because lately I’ve been pretty active outside of PT. At PT today, the therapist did ultrasound and some sort of electrical current on the joint. Hopefully that will make the inflammation start to go down. I’ll know by tomorrow, probably. Writing: Mt. Hermon conference starts this Friday! On Thursday night, I’ll be at the Santana Row Borders bookstore to help out (and hopefully learn a bit, too) at a booksigning for several of the ACFW authors who are attending Mt. Hermon .
