Labor

Captain's Log, Stardate 12.16.2009

TMI Alert:

I know that exercise is supposed to make period cramps lessen, but it has never done that for me. Not if I exercise the weeks before my period, not if I exercise during my period. And actually, if I exercise during or close to my period, I’ll start cramping and it’ll just be really painful and unpleasant.

The other day I was running and had to cut the run short because my cramps were just bad. I normally don’t panic, but my friend has endometriosis, and for a moment I wondered if I had that since the cramps were getting to me. So I IM’d her:

Me: For people with endometriosis, if you exercise, does that make your cramps worse?

Her: No, it makes it better.

Me: Then I guess I don’t have endometriosis.

Her: You'd know beyond a shadow of a doubt because the pain is so intense. Like labor.

Labor? As in, have children labor? As in, little Camys NOT running around my house?

Me: Um...that description doesn’t help me any.

Uh, well, I might help you out there a bit.

My cramps were so bad before I had kids I'd literally down almost an entire bottle of pain meds during it. After having four kids they went away, until 3 years ago. They came back stronger than ever. Part of my problem was ovarian cysts, they can make them bad. The other problem, not enough progesterone in my body. Once we fixed that, the cramps aren't as bad, only the first day and that's it.

I'd check with your doc and see what's up.

OK, I'll pipe in on this since I suffered from endometriosis since 1984 (first diagnosed) until my hysterectomy in 2004 and the cramps were HORRID!! I didn't feel like exercising so I have no idea if it would have helped. Because in 1984 endometriosis wasn't a well know. The crazy thing about endometriosis is that some women never have symptoms and don't even know they have it until they try to get pregnant and can't.

The only way to know for sure is possibly through ultrasounds (since they've improved so much) or laparoscopic.

Sorry for the rambling, a good OB/GYN should be able to help you know what's going on.

Blessings,
Holly

Meanwhile, can I recommend Excedrin for pain relief? I discovered this use of it after a visit to New Zealand. If you want to read the story, I wrote about it on my blog here.

I can't imagine anyone having cramps that felt as bad a labor did! (I'm 7 months post-partum. I haven't forgotten yet!) I feel for you ladies who have bad ones since there's no epidural to numb the pain away. :)

Camy - my friend swears by Pamprin when she's all crampy. I'm an Aleve girl -- it's basically the same as Midol and costs less. Exercise never helps me either...

I'm so glad I'm not alone in the cramps department! My problem is that my stomach is very sensitive so there are very few pain meds I can take that won't make me nauseated. Alleve, Advil, asprin--they all cause my stomach to get upset, and while I can take Tylenol, it doesn't do SQUAT!

My doctor says it doesn't seem like I have endometriosis, in her opinion, so that's a good thing.

Greeeeeaaaaat ... considering I'm due to give birth to my first child in 4 weeks, this is extremely exciting to know that labor is the worst "cramps" that monthly cramps can be associated with. WAAAHH!!! (they should make over-the-counter epidurals)

Lavender hand lotion

Captain's Log, Stardate 11.05.2009 I have to tell you, I LOVE Etsy.com ! Etsy is dedicated to providing a marketplace for people who like to make handmade products and people who appreciate them (and buy them). It has everything from handmade gifts (like my mom’s Bucilla Christmas stockings and ornaments and tree skirts and wall hangings and … well, just click here to see what she has! ) to soaps and lotions and jewelry and knitted items and hand-painted yarn and ... I could surf that website for DAYS. Anyway, lately I’ve been concerned about the lead content in my lotions, especially since I’m using them more now that it’s turned colder and drier here in California. I have to use lotion on my hands everytime after I wash them. So I went onto Etsy and searched for organic hand lotions, and bought this lavender lotion from Lue Cosmetics . What was really nice is that the owner, Jane, sent me a direct message via Etsy right after I made the purchase to ask if I’d received it yet and ...

Brainstorm - character occupation

Captain's Log, Stardate 03.23.2009 Hey guys, I could use some help. In my current manuscript, The Year of the Dog , which is a humorous contemporary romance, I have a minor character, Eddie. He’s my heroine’s ex-boyfriend, and they’re on good terms with each other. He’s a bit irresponsible, but not so much so that he’s a complete loser. He’s got a very easy going attitude, he forgets to pay his bills sometimes, he’s friendly and charming. He’s adventurous and fun to be around, but he’s a little forgetful sometimes, and he tends to spend a little outside his income. I need an occupation for him. What would a charming, easy going, slightly irresponsible guy do for a living? He’s not too irresponsible, because otherwise readers will wonder what in the world my heroine saw in him to date him in the first place. She was attracted to his charm, his easy going attitude (her family’s uptight, and he was a nice contrast), and his adventurousness. But his forgetfulness and irresponsibility ...

Chinese Take-Out and Sushi for One

Captain’s Log, Supplemental My agent sent me an article from Publisher’s Weekly that discussed this incident: Chinese Take-Out Spawns Christian Controversy And here’s also a blog post that talks about it in more detail: The Fighting 44s This is Soong-Chan Rah’s blog: The PCS blog In sum: Apparently Zondervan (yes, my publisher), who has partnered with Youth Specialties, had put out a youth leaders skit that had stereotypical Asian dialogue, which offended many Christian Asian Americans. In response to the outcry, Zondervan/Youth Specialities put out a sincere apology and is not only freezing the remaining stock of the book, but also reprinting it and replacing the copies people have already bought. I am very proud of my publisher for how they have handled this situation. The skit writers have also issued a public apology . (I feel sorry for them, because they were only trying to write a funny skit, not stir up this maelstrom of internet controversy. I’ve been in youth work long enou...

I GOT A CONTRACT!

Captain’s Log, Stardate 03.29.2006 I had a wonderfully funny blog post planned for today, but I got sidetracked by some news yesterday! Zondervan has offered me a three-book contract on my Asian chick-lit series ! I’m still stunned by everything that’s happened. The series is actually a 4-book projected Asian chick-lit series about four cousins who fall under the infamous family title "Oldest Single Female Cousin," and their ruthless, wealthy grandma applies pressure on each of them to improve their lack of love interests. I think the first book is tentatively scheduled to be released in August 2007. The blurb on the series is on my website here . Brandilyn Collins posted to the ACFW loop about my writing journey, and Tamara Cooper asked that I share it. And since you all know how much I like to talk , here it is. My writing journey: Like most writers, I have wanted to write since I was very young. (In high school, I wrote a fantasy novel that will never see the light of day ...

I got my cover!
