Captain's Log, Stardate 10.23.2005

NovelTalk has started a new blog called "Ask an Author." Aspiring writers can submit questions and NovelTalk's published authors will answer.

I think this is a great idea, especially if writers have a very specific question about the writing craft or business. Sometimes it's just hard to find the answer we need on various online writing articles, because we don't know where to start.

Writing: Been doing contest judging, and I'm almost done. I really do like judging and giving back to the writers groups, especially since I myself received so much when I first started writing.

It's just been hard to pinpoint exactly why an entry seems flat to me, or a character seems bland. I don't want to just say, "This doesn't work for me." That's the epitome of the useless comment.

I want to be able to say, "This character seems unemotional because she doesn't seem to react when things happen." Or "The reading flow for this scene is slow because there's too much narrative and the dialogue doesn't forward the action." I want to give specifics so the entrant will know exactly why I didn't care for some aspect of the writing.

But that's the hard part, figuring out that specific point. Sometimes I'm staring at a synopsis and going over story structure, trying to find out why the storyline seems to lose gas by the end. Or sometimes I have to review scene structure to figure out why the scene seems anticlimactic.

It's like a puzzle that I need to unravel. I do hope my comments are helpful to the writers, but at the same time, I know I'm not in this for the gratitude. After I finish, I'll be able to spend more time on my Hawaii Chicklit/suspense.

Diet: My stomach has been extra sensitive lately and I've been feeling slightly nauseated for a couple days. Last night at church youth group, our pastor Lester gave a bag of Bazooka gum as a prize and the high schoolers brought it into group discussion.

Being high schoolers, everyone was chewing and blowing and popping and spitting and stretching. Plus the sweet smell of bubble gum and sugar filled the air like a stink bomb. My stomach was ROILING.

Finally Josh got a huge bubble popped all over his face and in his hair, which is short and spiky like David's. I seriously was going to blow chunks right there.

This morning, my stomach was even worse so we didn't go to church. I'm thinking it'll be chicken vegetable soup tonight.

Judging...it can be very pleasurable, or very much a chore. I try really hard to be specific, so I know what you mean. I even sign my name and give my website address, that way, if the author would like a little more clarification on my comments, I can provide them. Of course, I realize I may well be setting myself up for some really ugly comments! LOL

But hey, Camy, IF you WERE to EVER become preggers, I still have some maternity clothes....don't know why I kept them....guess they were at the cleaners when I got rid of the rest and when I picked them up, I just shoved them in the back of the closet. Hmm...I really should consider moving them out, huh? I just don't want them to be lonely or anything! LOL

No Cold Bums toilet seat cover

Captain's Log, Stardate 08.22.2008 I actually wrote out my pattern! I was getting a lot of hits on my infamous toilet seat cover , and I wanted to make a new one with “improvements,” so I paid attention and wrote things down as I made the new one. This was originally based off the Potty Mouth toilet cover , but I altered it to fit over the seat instead of the lid. Yarn: any worsted weight yarn, about 120 yards (this is a really tight number, I used exactly 118 yards. My suggestion is to make sure you have about 130 yards.) I suggest using acrylic yarn because you’re going to be washing this often. Needle: I used US 8, but you can use whatever needle size is recommended by the yarn you’re using. Gauge: Not that important. Mine was 4 sts/1 inch in garter stitch. 6 buttons (I used some leftover shell buttons I had in my stash) tapestry needle Crochet hook (optional) Cover: Using a provisional cast on, cast on 12 stitches. Tabi socks, part deux

Captain's Log, Stardate 07.25.2008 (If you're on Ravelry, friend me! I'm camytang.) I made tabi socks again! (At the bottom of the pattern is the calculation for the toe split if you're not using the same weight yarn that I did for this pattern (fingering). I also give an example from when I used worsted weight yarn with this pattern.) I used Opal yarn, Petticoat colorway. Toilet seat cover

Captain’s Log, Supplemental Update August 2008: I wrote up the pattern for this with "improvements"! Here's the link to my No Cold Bums toilet seat cover ! Okay, remember a few days ago I was complaining about the cold toilet seat in my bathroom? Well, I decided to knit a seat cover. Not a lid cover, but a seat cover. I went online and couldn’t find anything for the seat, just one pattern for the lid by Feminitz.com . However, I took her pattern for the inside edge of the lid cover and modified it to make a seat cover. Here it is! It’s really ugly stitch-wise because originally I made it too small and had to extend it a couple inches on each side. I figured I’d be the one staring at it, so who cared if the extension wasn’t perfectly invisible? I used acrylic yarn since, well, that’s what I had, and also because it’s easy to wash. I’ll probably have to wash this cover every week or so, but it’s easy to take off—I made ties which you can see near the back of the seat. And

Chopsticks and knitting

Hahahahaha! My husband, Captain Caffeine sent me this cartoon. The Asian and the knitter in me loves this one: My parents taught me to use chopsticks at an early age so they’re pretty comfortable for me. Did you know there are differences between Japanese and Chinese chopsticks? The Chinese ones tend to be blunter and more slippery whereas the Japanese ones are pointier and sometimes have a textured tip to make it easier to grab food. My mom will eat salad with a chopstick, which I have to admit is a bit easier than a fork, for me. Any of you knit? Any of you use chopsticks?
